FairMormon is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing well-documented answers to criticisms of the doctrine, practice, and history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Question: Could the fact that Orson Pratt considered cureloms to possibly be mammoths support the theory that Joseph Smith used Gilbert Hunt's The Late War in "authoring" The Book of Mormon?
This was likely the best guess of Orson Pratt as to what cureloms were. There doesn't seem to be any evidence besides this to suggest that early Church leaders and members viewed cureloms as mammoths.
In order to make this criticism work, cureloms must be mammoths. They very well could be mammoths, but that does not mean that they are. Other animals have been proposed as cureloms. A couple of those proposals could be found here.
